Welcome to the Global Mental Health and Cultural Psychiatry Research Group

There is no health without mental health

According to recent data from the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly one billion people worldwide live with a mental disorder, including one in seven teenagers. Low and middle-income countries (LMICs) bear approximately 75% of this global burden. Despite the high prevalence, around 85% of individuals in these regions lack adequate mental health care. This significant treatment gap contrasts sharply with high-income countries (HICs), where access to mental health services is more readily available, though disparities persist, particularly among racial and ethnic minorities who often face unmet mental health needs.

The social stigma surrounding mental health issues further exacerbates these challenges, deterring many individuals from seeking the help they need. Despite the rising prevalence of mental health disorders, there remains a notable lack of research and training to support mental health resources and inform evidence-based policymaking. Our Global Mental Health and Cultural Psychiatry Research Group works across geographies to reduce the gaps in mental health research and ensure equitable chances.

Our Global Presence

Our Objectives

Establish ourselves as a leading mental health research group, addressing gaps in mental health worldwide.

Champion the idea of recovery from mental illness, enabling individuals to actively participate in society and the workplace, free from discrimination and stigma.

Connect mental health care professionals and groups to form a global movement of empowered experts advocating on a broader scale.

Collaborate with various population groups, focusing on areas such as childhood, aging, women’s health, gender, and ethnic minority groups.

We provide policymakers with reliable data and actionable recommendations to integrate mental health care into national health strategies, ensuring adequate funding and prioritisation of mental health programs.

We aim to eliminate the stigma attached to mental health problems through awareness campaigns, educational programs, and advocacy initiatives to foster a more supportive and understanding society.

We aim to build robust research frameworks that deepen our understanding of mental health disorders, treatment efficacy, and socio-economic impacts, focusing particularly on LMICs and marginalised groups in HICs.

We deploy tailored, research-driven mental health interventions, ensuring culturally sensitive and highly effective approaches to mental health care.
