Alexandra Health Visiting Team

ROHSN12 is a National Institute of Health Research funded project exploring the treatment of postnatal low mood in British South Asian women. The rates of postnatal depression for these ladies is higher than the general population and can cause disability and suffering in women and have negative consequences for their families.

The project compares women who have treatment as usual for postnatal low mood compared to women participating in the Positive Health Programme. This programme is a group of cognitive therapy based interventions that have been culturally adapted. The project seeks to determine how clinically and cost effective the culturally adapted group is for British South Asian Women.

The Alexandra Health Visitors have worked in collaboration with the Research Associate and Lead for Bolton in actively recruiting mothers to the project. The difficulty for researchers has been how to access mothers and it was agreed that the lead for Bolton could attend the local Well Baby Clinics alongside the health visiting team in order to make introductions in a safe environment. The Alexandra Health Visitors have actively encouraged referrals to the project as previously there has been a gap in providing emotional support for those from ethnic minorities.
